As humans, we can’t tell if the air we breathe is dry or humid. We can only tell if the air is warm or cold. When we breathe air with humidity below 40% relative humidity (RH) for long periods of time, our mucous membranes dry out, making us much less protected against viruses and bacteria. The recommended level of humidity indoors is about 40-55% RH, several studies have shown that at this level the number of illnesses is reduced.
