Industrial systems for automatic humidity control

Problems

Overheating of production lines can cause them to fail or maybe complete stops or break downs. Static electricity often cause fires in factories and warehouses. Traditional air-conditioning equipment in warehouses in terms of the cost of the systems themselves and the cost of their operation is a disadvantageous solution.

Dust extraction also requires expensive systems, electrostatic settling device. Industrial processes are often accompanied by unpleasant odors and chemicals. In extreme or long-term heat, traditional air-conditioning systems simply stop or go down because they are exposed to excessive load.

Industrial applications

Optimum humidity is an important production factor for print shops. Serious disruption to the production process can occur in offset printing, digital printing, rotary printing and in the packaging industry without additional air humidification:

Electrostatics
If paper is too dry during processing at low humidity, electrostatic charges are created. The paper sticks together and stops running smoothly through the printing press. This also applies to synthetic materials such as PVC or polypropylene.

Paper distortion
If humidity in the paper storeroom or print shop is too low, the material releases moisture into the room. This leads to unwanted changes in the dimensions of the paper. The paper then is no longer perfectly flat and cannot be processed efficiently. Doubling, register differences, wrinkling and distortion are difficulties frequently encountered as a result of low humidity.

Quality
Optimum levels of relative air humidity are assured year around with direct room air humidification. This helps to standardise the printing process, reduce spoilage, prevent machine stoppages, shorten production times and cut costs. The optimum equilibrium moisture for processing paper is between 50% and 60% of relative humidity.

Additional benefit:  standardised process water
As an added benefit, the pure water produced for the air humidification can also be used as standardised process water to supply the printing presses in offset printing. Purified water protects the printing machines from corrosion, reduces operating costs and ensures consistent print quality:

  • no toning and stripping, because of the constant water hardness and PH-value
  • extended service life of the print cylinders and rollers
  • lower share of isopropanol in the fountain solution reduces costs

If the air is too dry, the wood gives its own air humidity, especially during the heating season by reducing the humidity to less than 40% relative air humidity; there is an acute risk of wood damage both during storage and at each stage of processing.

The use of water-soluble paints requires a sufficiently constant ambient humidity to avoid adhesion problems. If the wood does not get direct moisture (eg rain), its moisture content corresponds to ambient air. For machining purposes, the ideal wood humidity is between 9 and 12%. These values correspond to a moisture content of between 50 and 60% relative humidity, thereby creating a balance between air humidity and wood. Spaces in which dried wood is stored or where the wood is handled should also be humidified – at least in winter against moisture fluctuations and to prevent damage to the wood.

Uneven humidity can cause changes in dimensions and greater distortion of the wood, as well as deformation, and wood cracks when the water content changes. Dust reduction is one of the main reasons why humidification is so popular in the wood industry. Another great advantage is that a humidifier that uses atomized water can be operated at a fraction of the cost compared to other air humidifiers.

The SANFOG high-pressure cooling and humidification systems effectively control humidity and air temperature even in greenhouses, so they can successfully solve the above problems. SANFOG systems operate on a “flash evaporation” basis. The used water is filtered and sprayed under very high pressure to give a very fine mist of several microns (corresponding to one tenth of the thickness of the human hair).

This extremely fine mist, in contact with ambient hot air evaporates very fast, removing heat and thus reducing the ambient temperature by up to 10 ° C. Reliable humidification at the highest level, original and patented cooling system to the exterior and interior. The operation of the system is not accompanied by excessive dripping, no hazardous or toxic chemicals are involved in the processes.

Ecological technology that also saves energy. The humidifier system is mounted in such a way that the sprayers are evenly distributed in the room. The mist thus dissipates quickly and without excessive humidification, thus regulating the temperature and humidity. Air humidity can be evenly regulated in the room throughout the reproduction and growth process.

Optimum humidity secures standardised processes, high production quality and lower costs in the various areas of the automotive industry as well as for many automotive industry suppliers:

Electrostatics

Electronic equipment, PCBs, components and data are all very sensitive to electrostatic discharges.  The electrostatic charge will be higher, the lower the humidity in the room is.  At a humidity of 55%, conductivity of air and material surfaces in the automotive industry are increased to a point where the electrical charges can be discharged easily. Controlled air humidification ensures the quality and protects against belated claims (IBNR) related to sensitive automotive equipment.

Paint lines

A sufficiently high degree of humidity prevents early evaporation of water-soluble paint. Paint colours can therefore be optimally transferred to the vehicle body. Consistently high surface quality with a perfect finish is the result of an optimum humidity of 70%.

Grinding processes

Added air humidification binds dust and reduces the dust attraction on the surfaces. In addition, an optimised humidity level also lowers the risk of dust explosions. In very warm production areas the air humidification cools the ambient air and creates a pleasant and healthy indoor climate for the automotive industry.

Ensuring constant and optimum humidity is one of the most effective ESD protective measures in electronics manufacturing. Added air humidification not only protects the quality of the components and end products, but also has a positive effect on the well-being and health at the work place:

Electrostatics (ESD protection)

A humidity level that is too low increases the risk of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and consequential damage to components and devices. Optimum humidity all year round provides effective protection against ESD. At a relative humidity of 40% – 50%, the conductivity of the air and the material surfaces has increased to the point where the electrical charges can easily be discharged. The reason for the rapid rate of discharge at a high humidity level is that a thin film of moisture forms on the materials, which makes the surface sufficiently conductive to prevent it from accumulating dangerous charges. This is how electronic components and assemblies are protected from semiconductor failures and their after-effects.

Less dust

As electrostatically charged surfaces also attract more dust, a constant, optimum humidity level helps reduces particle deposition considerably. At the same time dust particles are suppressed by the air humidification and will whirl in the air for a much shorter time.

Better working conditions

Humidification in the production areas also improves the working conditions of employees. When the humidity level is ideal and constant, for example, workers do not have to wear wrist grounding cables. This significantly improves their freedom of movement, removing some restrictions in the manufacturing process. Humidification also helps to counteract the typical effects of dry air, such as dry mucous membranes, respiratory illnesses and other ailments.

Systems

They have an operating pressure of up to 105 bar. The high-pressure system consists of a coarse impurity filter – in some cases also reverse osmosis, high pressure pump, distribution line and / or special equipment such as the SkyMist Spray Unit, Tangential Unit, Elimist Unit, Spray Nozzle Fan or Stainless steel distribution lins for nozzles.
